Capacity

Jonathan Nelson's "Capacity" is built around a single, repeated plea: "Increase my capacity for You." The song treats the believer's heart as something that can be stretched, and the verses that follow turn that request into a physical image — "God erupt, inside of me," then a rhythm of inhale and exhale, breathing freely. The language is deliberately bodily, as if spiritual growth were a matter of lungs learning to hold more air. A spoken interlude expands the frame of reference, confessing that in God we live and move and have our being, that apart from Him we are nothing, and comparing the soul's longing to a deer panting for water. The interlude closes by asking God to breathe within the listener, and the sung section answers with a simple, hypnotic repetition of "Breathe on me." The song never resolves into a testimony or a declaration of victory; it stays in the posture of asking, which is what gives it its devotional weight. The repetition is the point — the prayer circles rather than progresses, inviting the listener to settle into the request instead of moving past it. It ends where it began, still asking for more room.
